Wine Tasting on the Amalfi Coast: What to Know Before You Go

Ancient vines on impossible slopes — and roads that deserve their reputation.

Ancient vines on impossible slopes

Above Furore and Tramonti, some of Tintore’s vines are ungrafted (piede franco) and generations old, grown on terraces so steep they’re still often worked by hand. Alongside Tintore, look for the native whites Falanghina and Fiano, and the red Aglianico.

The route

Amalfi → Ravello → Furore → Tramonti: about 14 miles and, on paper, roughly 30 minutes — but budget more. The coastal road (SS163) is narrow, winding, and often busy, so real driving time runs longer than the straight-line estimate.

Three estates, three villages

Marisa Cuomo, in Furore, is open Monday to Saturday 9:00–16:00 by appointment. Tenuta San Francesco and Monte di Grazia, both in Tramonti, also require booking ahead.

Day trips inland: Irpinia, Naples and the Picentini hills

The coast’s own wineries are few and small, so our map also includes five estates you can reach in a day. Closest is Montevetrano, under an hour from Vietri in the hills above Salerno, with visits on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Cantine Astroni farms a volcanic crater inside the city of Naples — easy to pair with Pompeii — with tours Monday to Saturday. About 1 h 15 inland, Irpinia is home to Campania’s three top appellations (Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo): Feudi di San Gregorio, Mastroberardino and Quintodecimo all take visitors by reservation.

A note on driving

The Amalfi Coast road is famously narrow and, in summer, famously congested. If you’re not confident driving it, this is a reasonable stretch to hire a private driver for, even if you’re self-driving everywhere else in Italy.
